Callawassie Island adds two new amenities to its world-class golf and tennis facilities and will use local companies to build.

Callawassie Island announced its plans to break ground in 2016 on a new state-of-the-art Fitness Center and to embrace its Colleton River location with a new River Club Grill.

Callawassie Club members approved the building of the two new facilities to further enhance the island experience for its current and future members. The facilities will be welcome additions to its award-winning, 27-hole Tom Fazio golf course, tennis club, Lowcountry clubhouse, and pools.

“Recent research highlights that primary and second home seekers in the Lowcountry want an active lifestyle with first-class fitness facilities along with casual dining opportunities showcasing waterfront views,” said Jeff Spencer, the club’s General Manager. “These new facilities will meet these needs and more.”

What is interesting about this expansion is that the Callawassie Island Club Board will keep the projects local. The club will hire local architects, contractors and designers to create the new facilities, adding new jobs in the community.

“We received a positive response from the members and we will not incur any long term debt for the project,” said Mike MacGee, Callawassie Island Club President. “Our members are excited about getting these new facilities underway to enhance their already vibrant Lowcountry lifestyle.”

Callawassie Island, accessible by a causeway, is a private, gated residential community. It is conveniently located, only 15 minutes from Beaufort, SC, 35 from Hilton Head, SC, and 30 from downtown Savannah, GA. As one of only four certified Community Wildlife Habitats in South Carolina, the island “preserves, enhances and restores wildlife habitat and communicates the importance of such stewardship to the public.” Set among tidal marshes, Callawassie Island offers deep-water access to the Colleton River and Atlantic Ocean.
