Ask anyone who loves the Carolina Lowcountry what makes this area special, and you’re likely to hear them say “the water.”  Visitors and residents alike, including those of Callawassie Island, love to gaze at a beautiful sunset over the marsh grasses, watch a dolphin glide through shimmering waters, or simply relax and enjoy the soft touch of endless sea breezes. Even more enticing is the opportunity to venture out on the waterways that are a treasured part of everyday life here.

Captain Amber Kuehn, a fourth-generation Blufftonian, was born and raised on these waters. Her love of the Lowcountry became not only one of her largest passions, but also her career. As someone who now has diving and scuba certifications, a Master Captain’s License and a Master’s Degree in Marine Biology, Kuehn knows the waters here. She possess an abundance of life, science and history, and genuinely wishes to share her knowledge with all who are willing to listen.

For many Callawassie Island residents and guests, a chartered cruise with Captain Amber aboard the Spartina is an enjoyable way to not only explore the hidden aspects of this fascinating ecosystem, but to also experience the sheer beauty and serenity of the Lowcountry’s tidal creeks and marshes.

With charters leaving from Bluffton and occasionally Callawassie Island’s River Club dock (upon availability), the chance to experience one of the Lowcountry’s largest highlights is closer than you might think. Learning more about what lies beneath the surface truly gives those who tour aboard the Spartina a fulfilling and unique connection with the Lowcountry life.
